Fair Housing is more than just federal protected classes. When did Fair Housing become a law? How many laws and amendments are there? Are there additional state and local Fair Housing Laws? Often, apartment owners and managers will be confronted with prospects who want to know about the race, ethnicity or familial status of the residents in their community. An inappropriate response to such a question could make one liable for discrimination and result in a costly lawsuit. Be able to explain the importance of accurate records.
In this course we will address these and many other questions, taking Fair Housing “Do’s and Don’ts” on a case by case basis. Through discussion and class participation, students will learn how to process applications and how to make informed decisions about who is eligible and how to treat individuals with disabilities. We will learn the difference between intent and effect and that personal statements can be discriminatory.
